Nauticam Nikon D7000 Housing – Testimonial: Alan Powderham – a long time underwater photographer

September 16, 2011

I have just returned from my first my first trip with the Nauticam D7000. It was a revelation. The housing was a joy to use and I completely concur with the enthusiasm expressed in other reviews and testimonials regarding its outstanding ergonomics.

To place my own experience in context, I have been taking underwater photographs for over thirty years, commencing in the late 1970s with an Olympus OM1 and Vivitar strobes in Ikelite housings. It was all manual then with no TTL. However, I enjoyed some success winning a few competitions and had a book published “Venezuela Submarina” in 1983. Later, I graduated to a Nikon F4 in a Nexus F4 Professional housing with Nikonos 105 strobes. This was a beautifully balanced system and of
course complemented by the wonderful Nikon sports viewfinder. The results were so pleasing that I remained happily committed to film until this year.

So, not only was this my first outing with the Nauticam but also my very first venture into underwater digital photography. Such a change naturally carried high expectations, but the Nauticam proved the best friend that you could wish to take on such a learning curve. The location for this initiation was Lembeh straits in Sulawesi where I made some 36 dives in 12 days. I make relatively long dives and would usually have a day off in the middle of such a trip. Not this time – I was too excited! Right from the start, the results were impressive – a very small selection of which are included here.

I mention all this background to emphasise my delight in discovering how quickly the Nauticam established its truly excellent credentials. While I was confident with the investment, I did expect to miss, at least a little, the best aspects of my F4 based film rig. But not a jot – I was immediately charmed. The Nauticam did not just meet my expectations but wonderfully exceeded them.

To complement the beautiful balance of the housing, I used Inon Z240 strobes. The reliability of optical connections was another most welcome bonus. The synergy of the whole system felt just right from the first moment that I submerged – beautifully ergonomic and robust. Sure, with my early Ikelite system I had suffered the occasional leak – it was almost an inevitable rite of passage with such equipment. The Nexus housing never leaked but there were the usual issues with the electrical connections for the strobes. The Nauticam, with its simple and virtually fail-safe cam latches, takes robustness to a new level. It also has a very effective moisture alarm which increases
confidence even more but I never expected it to be triggered and it never was.

Nauticam and Underwater Visions are also to be commended for their excellent, attentive service which included making a special ‘one-off’ adaptor so that I could use the ports from my Nexus system.

So, huge thanks to Alex and Kat and the Nauticam team for all their support and such a superlative product.

Nauticam Light Mounting System

September 14, 2011
Nauticam

Nauticam has announced the release of an arm and clamp system to complement their housing range. It currently comprises a pair of housing trays for use with compact housings, or housings supplied without handles/strobe attachment points, double and single 1″ (25mm) ball arms in various lengths and a number of different clamps.

The clamps include a version that allows for the attachment of a lanyard, and a version that has provision for mounting a focus light. The new products are available now.

Press Release.

Nauticam light mounting system

Nauticam are very pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive light mounting system offering underwater photographers more of the stylish designs and thoughtful ergonomic solutions characteristic of the Nauticam range.

First up are the modular camera trays, the Flexitray and the Easitray. Both come with a single, rubberized left handgrip as standard with the option of an adjustable right handgrip and/or a 20mm or 30mm extension for use with thick gloves or larger housings. Compatible with most compact/compact system camera housings and even the Sea and Sea RDX series, both trays can come supplied with two Ikelite screws, imperial ¼” tripod screws or metric M6 screws. Handgrips can be fitted with optional 1” balls mounts or T-plate adapters allowing maximum flexibility for connecting arms. The difference between these two tray systems is that whereas the Easitray is fixed and non-adjustable, the Flexitray as standard is adjustable for both width and for handgrip positioning. Weighing in at around the 200g mark, these lightweight yet robust marine-grade anodized aluminum trays make the perfect companion to your camera housing.

Alongside the trays, we are pleased to release a complete hard-anodized aluminum super-lightweight arm system. Double ball arms are available in lengths of 75mm,100mm, 125mm, 200mm, 300mm and 400mm and feature characteristic blue, hardwearing rubber o-rings.

Nauticam Double Ball Arms.

Also available in the arm range is a full set of single ball arms with YS light mounting stem featuring an o-ring at the strobe attachment, as well as on the ball, for smoother, more precise control of strobe and light positioning.

Nauticam Single Ball Arms.

Continuing the trend of innovative solutions for underwater photographers, Nauticam is pleased to release a range of clamp sets. Nauticam clamps are precisely milled from solid aluminum, then hard anodized making them impervious to salt corrosion. Precisely radiused jaws provide the maximum clamping force possible with 1” balls and extensive engineering has produced very fine adjustment of clamp tension. This smoother, more precise adjustment of clamping pressure is especially important and beneficial as clamping forces are increased. Only a minimum amount of hand strength is required to release the clamp when “locked down”, due in part to a handle that is larger than competing models with outstanding leverage. All these benefits have been engineered in without any weight penalty. Two clamps are available, the standard clamp (80.8g) and the multi-purpose clamp (104g).

Nauticam Standard Clamp.

Nauticam Multipurpose Clamp.

The multipurpose clamp is another innovative solution designed to optimize the experience of the underwater photographer. The clamp comes with a shackle as standard. This can be used together with the lanyard system to assist in carrying your housing to and from dive sites and to provide a foolproof lifting point when passing your housing up to the boat.

With the shackle removed, this cleverly engineered clamp will also allow the attachment of a 1” ball mount or a YS light mount stem.

The Nauticam light mounting system is set to expand into the future with many more innovative solutions. Until then, the remaining items currently available in the range include 1” ball and YS mounts for cold shoe, 1” ball and YS mounts for fastening on arms, adapters for mounting INON, Ikelite and Sea and Sea strobes, and arm mounted wet lens holders (both 67mm and LD mount).

Nauticam NA-600D now available

September 1, 2011

Canon EOS 600D

The newest member of the Canon SLR lineup boasts an impressive number of advanced features at an entry-level price point. Depending on territory, this camera is known as the Canon Digital Rebel T3i (North America), or Canon EOS 600D (worldwide). The T3i features the same field-proven 18-megapixel sensor and 1080p HD video found in 7D, 60D, and 550D, and a new articulating screen makes high angle and low angle composition possible.

Nauticam NA-600D

Nauticam is proud to announce the arrival of the NA-600D housing for Canon 600D/T3i. The NA-600D builds on the success of the NA-550D housing with a new design that keeps the best of the 550D housing but adds new design elements to further enhance the functionality and ergonomics.

The NA-600D housing inherits the patented Nauticam port locking system, locking housing latches, comfortable rubberized handles, and innovative ergonomic access to key camera controls.  New features include a multifunction thumb lever for accessing Video Start/Stop and programmable AE Lock button (referred to as “*”), and control extensions moving all of the camera’s controls within reach of the right and left handles.

Unmatched Ergonomics

Nauticam housings are designed with in-water ergonomics in mind, and with NA-600D, Nauticam engineers have again created a system that puts important controls at the fingertips of the user.   Entry-level cameras like T3i are more dependent upon the menu system than higher end models for control changes, making it important to relocate many of the camera’s rear pushbuttons to the right handle.

Shutter Release, ISO, *, Video Start/Stop, AV +/-, and the camera’s front command wheel are all accessible via levers or dials under the right handle.  Pushbuttons on the back of the housing access Focus Area Selector, Quick Control Menu, White Balance, Autofocus Mode, Drive, Playback, Delete, and Set.  An accessory Zoom Gear Control Knob and pushbuttons for Menu and Info are available from the left handle.

Another innovative ergonomic advancement is Nauticam’s two-stage shutter release lever.  This mechanical lever greatly enhances tactile feel of the half press and full press positions of the shutter release button, allowing precise focus control, and less accidental shutter actuation.

The very successful AV +/- switch is unchanged from 550D.  When shooting in manual exposure mode, this lever assigns the function of the command wheel to shutter speed or f-stop, and when in Av or Tv modes enables exposure compensation.  The lever is large enough to be operated by feel, allowing the photographer to keep their eye in the viewfinder while operating this function and making exposure changes on the fly.  The fingertip ISO lever replaces the 550D ISO paddle, making it easier to change ISO –allowing quick video exposure changes right from the handle.

Continued Innovation

New, easy to use locking latches eliminate the stainless steel latches used previously.  This new closure method reduces overall size and is easier to operate.  These locking latches are easy to close with minimal hand strength required, and protected from accidental opening by a locking detent.

A lens release button is offered as standard equipment, allowing lens changes while a zoom gear is attached without opening the housing back.

NA-600D housing is the smallest SLR housing in the Nauticam lineup, which should appeal to anyone concerned with the large size of some SLR housings. This housing can still accommodate the same accessories as all other Nauticam housings, allowing use of an extensive line of lenses, ports, port adapters, lens gears, and viewfinders.

Patented Locking Port Release Lever & Locking Extension Rings

Nauticam’s acclaimed Patented Locking Port Release Lever is incorporated into the NA-600D housing.  Lens ports are inserted straight into the Nauticam mount, eliminating the twisting or threading actions that can extrude dry o-rings.  Once seated, the large red port lock lever is engaged, securely locking the port in place.  To remove a lens port, the silver unlock button is pressed, the port lever rotated to the outer position, and the port is pulled straight out of the housing.

Nauticam is pleased to offer the industry’s only locking extension ring system as standard equipment, securely fixing large dome ports even when mounted with an extension ring.

Patented Expanded Viewfinders

Nauticam’s highly acclaimed optional 180º and 45º viewfinders provide a crystal clear life size view of the camera’s optical viewfinder through a diving mask.  The patented external dioptric adjustment allows eye relief to be fine tuned in water.  High quality optics eliminate distortion and keep color fringing to an absolute minimum.  The edge-to-edge, magnified viewfinder image makes confirming fine focus and checking corner composition an absolute breeze.

Port Adapters for Other Housing Lines

Nauticam offers a full range of port adapters allowing existing housing owners to use their current ports.  This greatly reduces the cost of switching to a Nauticam housing, and brings the benefits of Nauticam Innovation to a wide range of underwater photographers!  Port Adapters are available for Aquatica, Ikelite, Inon, Nexus M5, Nexus M6, Sea & Sea NX, Seacam, Subal Version 3, Subal Version 4, and Zillion lens ports.

Optical Flash Connectors for Inon S-TTL, and Sea & Sea DS-TTL

Reliable automatic flash exposure is available with Nauticam housings and a variety of optically fired flashes.  Inon Z-240, D-2000, S-2000, Sea & Sea YS-110 Alpha, and YS-01 strobes provide automated lighting, precisely reproducing the camera’s onboard flash at a proportionally greater intensity.  This system yields accurate TTL flash performance with no electrical sync cables to flood!  Nikonos, Ikelite, and S6 style flash connectors are available as optional accessories for customers utilizing legacy electrically fired strobe systems.

Rubberized Ergonomic Handles

Nauticam uses a sophisticated over-mold process to produce extremely comfortable rubberized ergonomic handgrips.  Handles are available in two sizes to accommodate customers with different size hands, and spacers are available with the housing for cold water divers.

Proven Construction Materials

Nauticam Housings are machined from a solid block of seawater resistant aluminum alloy, then hard anodized making them impervious to corrosion.  All hardware is marine grade stainless steel.  Acrylic windows protected with a scratch resistant material.
